THE FEAST OF SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES: APOSTLES

Numbered among the 12 apostles, the first 12 bishops of the Church.

Philip, to whom Christ addressed the multiplication of loaves, was crucified at Hierapolis in Phrygia.

James, who was cousin to Jesus and brother of Jude, was made bishop of Jerusalem by Saint Peter, who was the first of the popes.

Called by the High Priest to deny Christ, James refused and was thrown from the terrace of the Temple and his head broken with a club.
